Automation V3: Chrome 137 and Above Extension
Chrome Behavior Update for Test Builder Authoring (Chrome 137 and Above)
Overview
Starting with Chrome version 137, Google has introduced changes to how browser extensions are handled. Now google doesn’t allow to auto load the extensions, as a result, Provar has made some changes in the behavior when launching Chrome for test authoring to align with these changes and ensure a smooth authoring experience.
What Has Changed
- When using Chrome version 137 or above, and the Provar Extension is not installed by default, users will see a message prompting them to install the extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- This prompt will appear the first time Chrome is launched via Provar TB session if the extension is missing.
- The extension must now be installed manually via the Chrome Web Store as a one-time setup per machine.
- Once installed, the extension will persist and does not need to be reinstalled when:
- Creating or switching to new workspaces
- Upgrading or reinstalling Provar
- Creating or switching to new workspaces
Installation Guidance
- Launch Chrome through Provar Authoring.
- If the extension is not present, a message will be displayed with a link to install it.
- Follow the link to the Chrome Web Store and install the Provar Extension.
- Once installed, the browser window will be closed.
- Relaunch the Test Builder session.
There is no need to modify any configuration or .ini files. All authoring functionality remains unchanged, and Chrome continues to be supported as the default browser.
Applicability
This change applies to Chrome version 137 and above only. Earlier versions of Chrome are not affected.

FAQ
Q1: Why am I being asked to install the Provar Extension in Chrome?
A: Starting with Chrome version 137, Google introduced changes in how extensions are handled. As a result, Provar now requires a one-time manual installation of the Provar Extension from the Chrome Web Store to enable authoring features.
Q2: Do I need to repeat the extension setup for every workspace or installer update?
A: No. The extension setup is required only once per machine. Once installed, it will persist across all Provar workspaces and future installer updates until chromeProfile is cleaned up from configuration.
Q3: Does this change affect users on older Chrome versions?
A: No. This new behavior applies only to Chrome version 137 and above. Users on earlier versions of Chrome will not see this prompt and can continue as before.
Q4: Do I need to update any .ini files or configurations?
A: No. There is no need to modify .ini files or any configuration settings. Provar manages the required setup internally once the extension is installed.
Q5: Will this impact test execution or only test authoring?
A: This change affects only the test authoring experience in Chrome. Test execution remains unchanged and is not impacted by the extension.
Q6: What happens if I don’t install the extension?
A: If the extension is not installed, Chrome launched through Provar will not support authoring actions. A prompt will appear with a link to the Chrome Web Store, guiding you to install the required extension before proceeding.
